In 2046, many aspects of life are carried out on a virtual network. No matter how advanced the time becomes, however, bullying never disappears. Haruyuki is one of the bullied students. However, one day he is contacted by Kuroyukihime, the most famous person in the school. "Wouldn't you like to 'accelerate' and go further ahead, boy?" Haruyuki is introduced to the "Accel World" and decides to fight as Kuroyukihime's knight.

He has been bullied for many years and because of that likes to go to places where no one is like the squash game on the local network at school. The incident that further triggered his desire for loneliness was when he was in elementary school. He killed all of his classmates during a game over the global net and was bullied by all of them and pushed further in to hiding.  One day he had an encounter with the school's most beautiful, refined girl, "Kuroyukihime", which changed his life abruptly. Introduced to the software she transmitted, Haruyuki learned about "Accel World", a program that enhances one's mind capabilities, with certain side-effects of him becoming Silver Crow and seriously changing his life. His avatar is the first real flying avatar.

Haruyuki Arita

Although she is dating Takumu, she also cares a lot for Haru. Her non-accelerated avatar is a catgirl. Chiyuri has been friends with Takumu and Haruyuki since they were children. The three of them are very close to each other and is still. During the time that they entered middle school, Chiyu decided to start a relationship with Taku. Even with their relationship, the three continued to stay close.  In volume 3 of the light novel, she decides to become a Burst Linker with Taku being her 'parent.' Her Duel Avatar's name is Lime Bell. It is a unique avatar because it has the special ability to restore HP, an ability only shared by 2 other Burst Linkers, one of which is no longer in the Accel World due to the pressure of possessing the rare ability. Her main goal as a Burst Linker is to rekindle the close friendship she, Taku, and Haru once shared, fearing the game is tearing them apart. Kuroyukihime wonders if she is mentally strong enough to use Brain Burst, but the group eventually gives in and gives her the program. To her friends' surprise, the program installs successfully.  In truth, her ability is not to restore HP but to turn back time to the point that the Duel Avatar did not receive damage. Lime Bell's bell, according to Chiyu, sounded like the chime of the school bell back in grade school. Her inner conflict was that she wants to turn back the time to that point where the three of them were good friends.  Lime Bell's new nickname is Watch Witch. She dived into the unlimited stage and got an ability called Acoustic Summon that can gather Enemies (ability's from an item called Choir Chime).

The main female protagonist and leader of the Nega Nebulus legion, her real name is unknown. Her pseudonym is Japanese word play with Snow White. Beautiful and popular, she is also the Student Council Vice-President at Umesato Junior High School. She has been a Burst Linker since she was eight years old.  Kuroyukihime was formerly the Black King, although she was driven into hiding after beheading the first Red King, Red Rider, while trying to defeat the other kings to reach level 10. She values Haru as more than a subordinate and is often the voice of reason to him when he is willing to go to extremes to protect her. Prior to her hospitalization, she confesses to Haru that she fell in love with him.  She is a very calm and patient person, a girl who constantly loves to drink tea, if it is in school or in a restaurant. She is not always that calm and patient as she can sometimes be rude, angry, or jealous even when some girls are starting to flirt with Haruyuki. She is also a girl who is wise with words and can talk manipulatively to another which they see it as annoyance. She is also a smart and clever girl, knowing the details about the "Brain Burst" game, since she was once known as the "Black King". The Brain Burst is not her only knowledge. She also has knowledge about wired connections or anything network related, as she can tell and give information in the smallest details. She even knows the steps of the networks that has been used.  There is nothing known about her abilities of her virtual character, or her brain burst character. What is only known is that her virtual character defeated Haruyuki's high score in a squash game. It is also known that her brain burst avatar, the "Black Lotus" is a powerful avatar, since she was able to defeat the previous Red King. Outside of her knowledge of the brain burst program and her virtual network knowledge, she has been shown to be a great strategist.  Her real first name is partially revealed at the end of episode 24 when Fuuko Kurasaki calls her "Sacchan".

Kuroyukihime

Birthday: April 2, 2033 Age: 13 Class: Year 1 Middle School - 7th Grade Height: 170 cm (5'6") Weight: 56 kg Legion: Nega Nebulus School: Umesato Junior High School Level: 5 Avatar: Cyan Pile  Chiyuri's boyfriend. He is excellent at academics and athletics. He attends a famous school that goes from elementary to high school. Takumu is friendly with Chiyu and Haru and was seen to be nice and well-mannered. Haru looked up to him as a role model and mentor whenever they battle in Accel World together. He is seen to be wise and knowledgeable when it comes to the Brain Burst program and during battles were he is able to deduce the most sensible strategy. After joining Nega Nebulus, he calls Kuroyukihime "master" as a sign of respect. His caring way has him trying to stop or resolve arguments which is usually between Kuroyukihime and Yuniko. However, his knowledgeability and kindness is also where some people such as Yuniko or Kuroyukihime allows them to make jokes or insults towards him like calling "professor" or "four-eyes". He takes these seriously and becomes depressed.  His other name is a spoiler please stop adding it It is revealed that Taku is Cyan Pile and the reason for him being good in school and in kendo is that he uses the Brain Burst program to cheat.

Gender: Male Legion: Great Wall Avatar: Ash Roller  Haruyuki's first opponent in the Accel World. His Duel Avatar is a biker gangster with a skull for a head. He also rides a chopper which is considered a part of his avatar and serves as his weapon as well.  He defeated Haruyuki cleanly in the first match but Haruyuki challenged him to a rematch in the same day after getting instructions from Kuroyukihime.  He was beaten in the rematch after Haruyuki exploited the weakness of the motorcycle's design which forced him to get off the motorcycle and resort to a fist fight.

Ash Roller

Gender: Male Occupation: Blue king Legion: Leonidz (Leader) Avatar: Blue knight Level: 9 Dislikes: Black Lotus  Blue Knight is a level 9 Burst Linker. He is the Blue King and the leader of the Blue Legion, Leonidz. He appears briefly when Cyan Pile decides to leave the blue legion and join Nega Nebulus, instead of using the Judgement Blow on him, he decides to spare his life for unknown reasons.  A level 9 Burst Linker and one of the Six Kings of the Accelerated World. He commands the legion "Leonids." He is seen to be accompanied with two other people, known as the Royal Guards.  Blue Knight's abilities are mainly unknown, but it's quite obvious that he has high quality swordsmanship. His strength is also further proven in his level 9 status and his titles such as "Vanquisher" and "Legend Slayer." His sword is one of the Seven Arcs, the First Star of the Dipper «Alpha», Great sword «The Impulse». He is respected enough to be chosen as the one to judge whether or not Silver Crow should be uninstalled after he equips the «Disaster Armor».  In Volume 12, his abilities are listed as «Unlimited Driving Force» and «Pain Killer», suggesting that he possesses techniques geared towards direct confrontation of his opponent no matter how powerful it may be.  He possesses one of the 7 Sacred Treasures of Accel World, the sword Impulse. According to Niko in volume 11, he is the strongest out of all the Kings.

Haruyuki Arita is an overweight, bullied middle schooler who finds solace in playing online games. But his life takes a drastic turn one day, when he finds that all his high scores have been topped by Kuroyukihime, the popular vice president of the student council. She then invites him to the student lounge and introduces him to "Brain Burst," a program which allows the users to accelerate their brain waves to the point where time seems to stop. Brain Burst also functions as an augmented reality fighting game, and in order to get more points to accelerate, users must win duels against other players. However, if a user loses all their points, they will also lose access to Brain Burst forever.
Kuroyukihime explains that she chose to show Haruyuki the program because she needs his help. She wants to meet the creator of Brain Burst and uncover the reason of why it was created, but that's easier said than done; to do so, she must defeat the "Six Kings of Pure Color," powerful faction leaders within the game, and reach level 10, the highest level attainable. After the girl helps Haruyuki overcome the bullies that torment him, he vows to help her realize her goal, and so begins the duo's fight to reach the top.
