During his lifetime, Kiritsugu was disillusioned with becoming a Hero of Justice, a defender of humanity who could save everyone. Although he feels he failed to do so, his efforts were a source of inspiration for Shirou.  Prior to his fateful meeting with Shirou, Kiritsugu was notorious as the "Magus Killer," a freelancer who would hunt down heretical magi. Although he was a magus with Magic Circuits and abilities he was considered unorthodox in that he would utilize modern technology and weaponry along with his magecraft to track down and kill magi.  Although mentioned and seen in flashbacks in Fate/stay night, Kiritsugu is one of the main protagonists in its prequel Fate/Zero.  Due to his father, Norikata Emiya, fourth family head of the Emiya family and a magus who received a Sealing Designation, Kiritsugu lost his mother shortly after he was born. Father and son were on the run from the Mage's Association, and thus Kiritsugu spent his youth wandering around the world with his father.

Kiritsugu Emiya

An arrogant, selfish, and enigmatic Archer-class Servant. He appears familiar with Fuyuki City and claims to have a past relationship with Saber. Typically clad in an ornate golden armor, he possesses an immense number of Noble Phantasms, though none are representative of his true identity.  Gilgamesh is the great half-god, half-human king born from the union between the King of Uruk, Lugalbanda, and goddess Rimat-Ninsun. He ruled the Sumerian city-state of Uruk, the capital city of ancient Mesopotamia in the B.C. era. He was an ultimate, transcendent being so divine as to be two thirds god and one third human, and no others in the world could match him. He was a despot possessing high divinity who believed he was invincible. He is not merely a legend, and is said to have actually existed and ruled during the Sumer Dynasty five thousand years ago. He was the King of Heroes who possessed all things in the world, whose tale is recorded in mankind's oldest epic poem, the Epic of Gilgamesh which portrays Gilgamesh as a hero, destined to be king and achieve great feats, who is driven to meet his destiny, facing challenges together with his best friend Enkidu.  His title, King of Heroes, is not meant to call him a king who is a hero, but instead implies that he is the king over all heroes. He is mankind's oldest hero, the origin of all myths and model on which heroes are based, so his story is copied within the mythologies of all the countries of the world. The heroes of various myths are derived from his legend, so his Gate of Babylon possesses all of their Noble Phantasms. Though there are several heroes holding the title of "King," the King of Knights and King of Conquerors, he is the only one in all of heaven and earth crowned with the title of "King of All Heroes."  Gilgamesh was initially summoned by Tokiomi Toosaka in the Fourth Holy Grail War, who used a fossil of the first skin ever shed by a snake as a catalyst. With Toosaka's death, Gilgamesh participated with Kirei Kotomine to obtain the Holy Grail, intending to cleanse the world of humanity, which he felt had become corrupted and vile, thus not worth of his reign. When Kiritsugu Emiya killed his Master, Gilgamesh remained in the physical world long enough to be drenched by the pollution within the tainted Holy Grail. Contact with this ichor normally corrupts a Servant's ego, but Gilgamesh resisted submission to the evil influence. However, the saturation converted his spiritual body to one of flesh and blood, and Gilgamesh also become more eccentric and excitable.  Noble Phantasms: Gate of Babylon - A small, plain sword that doubles as spatial key, allowing Gilgamesh to access his vast wealth contained within a vault in the heart of ancient Babylon. Inside this treasury are a myriad of Noble Phantasms collected during the peak of Uruk's civilization. Gilgamesh either throws these weapons or fires them out of his vault like rockets.  In several instances, Gilgamesh has removed and normally wielded weapons. It is the hurling of these weapons that designate his class as an Archer. Several Noble Phantasms are of paramount importance:  Merodach - A relatively unadorned but lustrous Noble Phantasm of immense magical power. Although not famous at all when compared to either of its descendants, the strength of Merodach as a Noble Phantasm exceeds either Gram or Caliburn.  Durendal - This gleaming, holy sword is enchanted by three miracles, allowing its blade to never dull even when its user's Mana has been expended. Old legends call Durendal indestructible.  Enkidu - One of the few relics Gilgamesh actually used during his lifetime, this chain was forged specifically to immobilize gods, albeit significantly less effective against opponents with little or no divinity.  Ea (Enuma Elish) - A black, pillar-shaped sword, etched with fine crimson cuneiform letters. With an energy output that exceeds Excalibur, rotation of Ea's tri-blade segments vacuums and compresses surrounding atmospheric gasses. Upon release, the ensuing cataclysmic blast sunders the foundations of reality, causing a collapse of time and space that disintegrates everything around the area of attack. Ea's material components have no origins in the mortal plane; unlike other weapons, it cannot be replicated through tracing. It is the most powerful Noble Phantasm in Gilgamesh's arsenal.  Vimana - mythical self-moving aerial car (sometimes serving as a seat or throne, sometimes self-moving and carrying its occupant through the air; other descriptions make the Vimana more like a house or palace, and one kind is said to be seven stories high.

Gilgamesh

Kotomine Kirei is the overseer of the Holy Grail War and resides at the church on top of the hill. He is callous and sarcastic, but also quite knowledgeable. As the supervisor of the Grail War, it is his duty to uphold the rules of the Holy Grail War, cover up any incidents that might expose the War to the public, and give sanctuary to any Masters who drop out. Both Tohsaka and Shirou appear to detest him, though in truth they don't seem to dislike him too much. Despite the enmity between the Mage's Association and the Church, Kotomine is a member of both organizations, which is presumably the reason he was chosen to be be the overseer.  Kotomine plays an important role in the unfolding events in all three routes, but the route that features him most heavily is the final one, Heaven's Feel where he takes an active role early on. Kirei Kotomine

Height: 212 cm  Weight: 130 kg True Identity: Alexander the Great/Iskandar, King of Conquerors  Master: Waver Velvet Catalyst: Mantle once worn by Iskandar himself Holy Grail War No.: 4th Holy Grail War  Rider was originally meant to be summoned by Lord Kayneth El-Melloi Archibald, but due to some circumstances, he ended up being Waver Velvet's servant.   Iskandar, or how he refers to himself, the King of Conquerors is a noble and courageous man, who prefers to conquer his enemies by winning without killing and controlling without humiliating them. He is known as a marvelous ruler who once almost conquered the whole known world.  He is not pragmatic, but is a person who lets history run its course and acts according to his impulses. While he is wild and somewhat inconsiderate to others, his greed ultimately resulted in the happiness of the people he ruled over.  In the new era, Rider is mostly amazed by ordinary modern things, and usually spends his free time exploring modern war vehicles and machinery.

Loyal, independent, and reserved, Saber acts coldly but is actually suppressing her emotions to focus on her goals. Her class is considered the "Most Outstanding," with excellent ratings in all categories. Since her Master cannot effectively provide her with mana, she minimizes her activity to preserve what she has. Saber is frustrated by Shirou's "protective" tendencies, believing his erratic and reckless behavior will jeopardize her chances of winning the Holy Grail War.  Saber is a strong-willed young woman who always speaks resolutely. She is courageous, determined, and set on winning the Holy Grail. She constantly insists that she is a knight first and that her gender is of little importance to her. She is resolute in following her own morals regardless of more viable tactics being available should she consider them to be underhanded, leading to conflicts with Kiritsugu over the strategy within the Fourth Holy Grail War. While obtaining the Holy Grail is of the utmost importance, rejecting her chivalry is something that she will not do under normal circumstance even if it should put her at a disadvantage.  She doesn't like to be treated as a woman, or even as a human, due to her status as a knight and a Servant. She tries to keep the notion that she is only a Servant, a tool for her Master, first and foremost in her mind, so she initially has no objections about Shirou accidentally seeing her naked body. She slowly becomes more aware of herself after their relationship develops, and eventually even becomes flustered upon the same situation being repeated. She is unwilling to show emotions, as she has suppressed them so strongly and views herself as a knight foremost. Even though she attempts to hide them, her insecurities become more and more apparent, and she later begins to open up more and show her emotions more easily, especially to Shirou.  Though she once felt more linked to dragons, she came to enjoy lions after taking care of a lion cub for a month at some point in her life. She claims that it is not that she "likes" them, but rather the happiness she experienced as he became attached to her brought forth a bond with them. He was very energetic, often biting or scratching, but she wished to be able to stay with him until the end. She has had feelings for them since then, and even remembers the fond memories while holding a stuffed lion. Shirou seeing the memory of her rubbing her cheek against the lion comments on it being a time where she looks like a girl her age.  She is shown to have a humongous appetite, finishing large servings of rice within one minute. Although she can normally eat anything, Shirou's food education is what awoke her gourmet spirit. She originally did not appreciate modern food as she doesn't actually need to eat as a Servant and because she had believed that all food was like fish and chips. She had very bad experiences with the food in her time, due being limited to meals like large quantities of potatoes, vinegar, bread, and ale or even at times simply eating vegetables alone.  She did not concern herself with food much in her life, allowing the cooks to do as they wished. She felt it was unrefined, although she was not displeased by it. She does shudder at the thought of eating it compared to Shirou's cooking. She thought it had been made to suit the tastes of the knights because they acknowledged it as tasting good, but they simply were unable to say it was bad to the King's face.  She is very cold and merciless to Illya during most of Fate/stay night despite her being Irisviel's daughter. This is due to the fact that she never asked Irisviel about the name of her daughter, and when Saber sees Illya during the war, she completely disregards the possibility that it could be the same child. She believes that Illya is too young to be the girl she saw getting a piggy-back ride ten years before, and she believes that she would have become more mature like her mother by the time of the Fifth Holy Grail War. She reasons that Illya is a new homunculus completely unrelated to Irisviel with similarities in her appearance due to the Einzbern homunculi looking alike after their creation. Given a chance to casually interact with her, while she doesn't trust Illya at first, she is eventually able to act nicely around her. She is able to freely have fun around her without any worries. Fate/Zero Saber is summoned by Kiritsugu Emiya to participate in the Fourth Holy Grail War on behalf of Jubstacheit von Einzbern and the Einzbern family. Kiritsugu partners Saber with Irisviel von Einzbern, to act as Saber's Master in the open while he acts from behind to win with his own methods. On the final day of the Holy Grail war, Saber found the Holy Grail but she also meets Gilgamesh who was waiting for her. He proposes that she becomes his wife while she lays defeated in front of him. Saber refuses as the Holy Grail is just in front of her. Saber destroyed the Holy Grail in the fourth Holy Grail War because Kiritsugu used multiple command seals in order to force her to act against her will. However, she only managed to destroy the Grail's physical form. She was also caught in her own Excalibur blast, sending her back to the battlefield of Camlann. She was the sixth and final servant to perish in the fourth Holy Grail War. Her true identity is that of King Arthur aka. Arthur Pendragon (Uther's daughter who hid her gender to be accepted as King). She has joined the Holy Grail War in order to grant her wish of redoing the selection of King due to her belief that she failed to keep her country from chaos. She wields the legendary holy sword Excalibur (cloaked in a veil of wind to hide its popular identity and thus its owner's) but no longer carries its lost sheath Avalon. Birthdate: February 1 Height: 158cm Three sizes: 85/56/84  Irisviel von Einzbern is the partner of Saber. She is the mother of Illyasviel von Einzbern. She is married to Kiritsugu Emiya, the biological father of her daughter.  Like her daughter, Irisviel is a homunculus, an artificial being created by the Einzbern. However, due to the enchantment that obscured his identity, his status page was shown blurred, making it impossible to identify the specific names and natures of his Phantasms, save for the sword Arondight. In addition, this Berserker is uniquely able to make anything he chooses into his own Noble Phantasm and effectively wield them, from telephone poles to the Noble Phantasms of other Servants.   Berserker's real identity is Lancelot of the Lake, as revealed recently in the Fate/Zero series. Until his identity was revealed, he had been known simply as the Black Knight.   Lancelot, known as the Knight of the Lake, had been loyal to Arturia, knowing both the king and the secrets of her sword well. Lancelot's downfall began when he loved Arturia's queen. Though the king was actually a woman, Arturia had married in order to present the image of a stable royal family before the kingdom and to maintain the illusion that she was a man in the face of the general public. Her queen willingly sacrificed her own life as a woman in order to fulfill the ideal of the stable government.   However, Lancelot and the queen fell in love. Though he wanted to take her away, Lancelot's loyalty to Arturia and his sense of duty to serve the kingdom prevented him from doing so. When political enemies of the king exposed Lancelot and the queen's affair, the queen was ordered to be executed. Left with little choice, Lancelot rebeled in order to try and save her. The knight, the queen, who had made her beloved betray his duty, and the king, who felt responsible for the despair her most loyal servant endured, all suffered.   Though Lancelot suffered greatly, he found that he could not hate Arturia, who had never blamed Lancelot for anything regarding the state of affairs they had become entangled in. With the promise of granting any wish, the omnipotent Holy Grail triggered three wars in the past, each too cruel and fierce to leave a victor.
