He is the series' protagonist. He has the lowest psychic rank possible at Level 0—largely because the people testing psychic abilities cannot detect or classify his abilities. His power is Imagine Breaker (å¹»æƒ³æ®ºã�—, "Illusion/Fantasy Killer"), a power which negates all magic, psychic, or divine powers but also his own good luck. Due to the nature of his power, the founder of Academy City considers him neither a Psychic nor a Magician but rather a normal person with a unique ability.   He tends to stay away from trouble but possesses a strong sense of justice, albeit somewhat shallow and dogmatic. He is a smart student and knowledgeable about certain subjects yet is a failure in his esper studies. While he is an idealist for the hopes of other people, ironically he is cynical about himself possibly because of his powers.   In order to save Index from the need of a memory reset, he had activated her self-protection system and destroyed the spell responsible for her mind strain but ends up having his memories destroyed when he came in contact with Feather of Light (å…‰ã�®ç¾½, Hikari no Hane?). Though he no longer remembers the past, he claims his heart has not completely forgotten the people he cares about. His memories lost is kept a secret except himself and only a few know, which include his doctor (who unknown to TÅ�ma, is Heaven Canceler, Aleister's personal physician), his parents after telling them the truth during the Academy City Sports Festival, Terra of the Left who manage to figure it out by himself and recently, Mikoto when she learns about it from an accidental phone conversation between him and Terra and confronted him about it and forced him to tell the truth. Throughout the series, he tries to live his life normally while still facing against the many adversaries from the worlds of science and magic and the conflicts that follow. Despite his very bad luck, he has managed to get the interests and hearts of many ladies who are infatuated with him, which Aisa jokes about, that his life is like a dating sim where he is bound to unlock more paths to more girls.  One of the series' main mysteries is the origin of Imagine Breaker, since it is neither an esper ability or a magical ability. Later in the series, it is hinted to be of Divine origin according to two members of God's Right Seat. Fiamma believes Imagine Breaker is the container for his Holy Right, which holds the power of miracles and Terra hints Imagine Breaker's full powers have yet to be unlock; if it does, its powers would extend to Touma's whole body and beyond. In NT volume 11, Shokuhou Misaki found herself being chased by a group called Deadlock who wanted to kill her. Touma stood to protect her even after they offered to let her go, but was heavily injured in the process. On the verge of dying, Misaki used her Mental Out to cut off his sense of pain so that the EMTs could save him, as he received a radical drop of blood pressure. Touma's life was saved, but as a price, his "pathways that call in the memories" were damaged causing him to lose his memories about Misaki and making him unable to remember her even after other future encounters. Touma Kamijou

Age: 14-15 Height: 148 cm Classification: Magician  Index (ã‚¤ãƒ³ãƒ‡ãƒƒã‚¯ã‚¹), also known by her full name Index Librorum Prohibitorum (ç¦�æ›¸ç›®éŒ², "List of Prohibited Books"), is one of the main heroines and the titular character of the series. She is a young nun from Necessarius (å¿…è¦�æ‚ªã�®æ•™ä¼š, Hitsuyouaku no Kyoukai, "Church of Necessary Evil"), a branch of the Church of England. Index is small in stature and has a petite build. About 14 or 15 years old, she has thigh-length, silvery-blue hair with very white skin and large green eyes. She also wears a white robe with golden embroidery sewed onto every edge of it, the Walking Church, that prevents any injury on her, but it is later destroyed by Touma when he touched it with his right hand, which is why her uniform is stitched with golden pins. Her mind has been implanted with the 103,000 magical texts of the Index-Librorum-Prohibitorum as she possesses Photographic memory, which makes magicians wonder if she really is human because just one grimoire is poisonous to the mind, and one is more than enough to kill a person without the proper preparative.  Her sorcery name is Dedicatus545, "The lamb is devoted to protecting the wisdom of the strongest" (çŒ®èº«çš„ã�ªå­�ç¾Šã�¯å¼·è€…ã�®çŸ¥è­˜ã‚’å®ˆã‚‹ Kenshinteki na kohitsuji wa kyousha no chishiki wo mamoru). The Church says that the grimoires take up 85% of her mind, so she only has 15% of memory space left to use in daily activities, which allows her to live normally for less than a year. However, all of this is revealed to be a lie after Touma begins to question how the Church even got to numbers like 15% and 85% and finds out from Komoe that the human mind can store an unlimited amount of memories. This was purposely done as the Church planned to make the grimoires harder to access by telling their underlings to perform "maintenance" on her mind in exactly one-year intervals once her memory has come to its "limit"; that way, she will not remember her close friends and accidentally and/or purposely reveal the contents of the grimoires. When she is being invaded by outsiders or injured, her self-protection system personality, Johann's Pen (è‡ªå‹•æ›¸è¨˜ã€ˆãƒ¨ãƒ�ãƒ�ã�®ãƒšãƒ³ã€‰Jidou Shoki, "Automatic Writing"), will be activated to allow her to use magic to cast high-class magic attacks such as St. George's Sanctuary (è�–ã‚¸ãƒ§ãƒ¼ã‚¸ã�®è�–åŸŸ) and Dragon's Breath (ç«œçŽ‹ã�®æ®ºæ�¯ã€ˆãƒ‰ãƒ©ã‚´ãƒ³ãƒ–ãƒ¬ã‚¹ã€‰, Ryuuou no Satsu Iki, "Killing Breath of the Dragon King"). Her self-protection system will use the Feather of Light (å…‰ã�®ç¾½, Hikari no Hane) to force a reset on Index's own memory should a manual reset fail to be performed. Although she does not know that she has magical powers, she can easily identify the types of magic by seeing it or somebody describing it to her and know how to counter them. Her vast knowledge of the Index-Librorum-Prohibitorum within her mind makes her to be one of the most powerful characters so far and becomes very helpful to her friends in various situations using skills like Spell Intercept (å¼·åˆ¶è© å”±ã€ˆã‚¹ãƒšãƒ«ã‚¤ãƒ³ã‚¿ãƒ¼ã‚»ãƒ—ãƒˆã€‰, Kyousei Eishou, "Force Chant"), and Sheol Fear (é­”æ»…ã�®å£°ã€ˆã‚·ã‚§ã‚ªãƒ¼ãƒ«ãƒ•ã‚£ã‚¢ã€‰, Mametsu no Koe, "Voice of Destruction of Evil") and makes her a target of interest for many.  She is often elated by a variety of things and is slightly ignorant and curious of modern technology. She usually is gentle and polite with people and has a kind nature, but she is also easily irritated especially by TÅ�ma who usually ends making her mad in some way as consequence of his bad luck which ends with her biting him. She also has an large appetite and uses any excuse to get food from anyone and likes watching an anime series called Magical Powered Kanamin.  She has strong feelings towards Touma and even confessed her love after hearing Touma lost his memories because of her, however he avoided answering by changing the subject of the talk since he has no idea about what kind of feelings he used to have towards Index.  When she returns to England, she is sought out by Fiamma who wants her knowledge and reactivates Johann's Pen mode. Later during her stay at Necessarius Headquarters at St. George Cathedral, she learns the bitter truth about Touma when Fiamma reveals Touma lied to her about his memories, which sends her on a rampage and grows angelic "Red Wings" and corners Stiyl with ease who tries to restrain her just by flapping her wings. She also has displayed the ability to summon legendary weapons and artifacts as she did in the volume 21 and use them to attack, the main weapon of her selection was the "Sword of Freyr", the magic sword of the god from the Norse Mythology, which fights on its own "if wise be she who wields it" and was stated its wielder has never suffered defeat. Index Librorum Prohibitorum

Age: 13–14  Height: 161 cm Birthday: May 2 Hair color: light brown Eye color: light brown Classification: Esper School: Tokiwadai Middle School Level: 5 Ability: Railgun (level 5 version of the Electromaster ability) Known Relatives: Misaka Misuzu (Mother), Misaka Tabigake (Father) Sisters (clones) Mikoto Misaka is one of the series' main heroines in Toaru Majutsu no Index series and the protagonist of her side story, Toaru Kagaku no Railgun. A psychic user of Academy City, her powers are ranked Level 5, the highest rank for the most powerful psychic users, and she ranks as third-strongest out of the seven people who hold this rank in Academy City.   She attends Tokiwadai Middle School, a famous girls' school for the rich and elite psychics and one of the five elite schools of Academy City. To most people, she is considered a proper lady, but in reality, she has a short-tempered, prideful, and improper attitude with some tomboyish tendencies and insecurities, a fact few other characters know. She is fond of cute, childish things, such as flowery pajamas and Gekota, the popular frog mascot franchise. She has a strong sense of morals and hates injustice, contrary to what she claims. Her power is to generate electricity; she is powerful enough to cause a blackout in the city, make instant railguns by using coins as projectiles, and use electricity to magnetically attract iron particles around her into a chain-sword whip. She can also manipulate electrical objects such as networks and security systems. She has a one-sided rivalry with Touma, who nicknames her "Biribiri" (ãƒ“ãƒªãƒ“ãƒª, relating to the sound of an electric shock), ever since their first meeting before the events of the first novel when he first dissipated her electricity. Since that incident, she is always trying to have a proper match with Touma and defeat him despite his many attempts to avoid conflict with her.   When Mikoto was young, she was tricked into giving the city's scientist her DNA under the pretense of finding the cure for Duchenne muscular dystrophy when they actually wanted to create military combat clones of her. After discovering that the clones didn't have the same power levels as Mikoto, they were instead used in a Project called "Level 6 Shift": fated to be killed by Accelerator in order to create the first Level 6 esper. The events of how Mikoto tried to stop the project are briefly mentioned in the third novel but are later expanded and given more detail in the Toaru Kagaku no Railgun manga. When all of Mikoto's attempts failed, she contemplates letting herself be killed by Accelerator in order to prove the Tree Diagram's calculations faulty. However, it is not until Touma intervenes and beats Accelerator, proving him to be really weak. The Level 6 Shift project canceled and the remaining 9969 sisters—the clones—are spared. After the events of the third novel, she eventually develops strong feelings towards Touma but is unable to express them due to her insecurities and the fact other girls were also interested in him. Even though both she and Touma tend to bicker and argue with each other, they a have sort-of friendly relationship. Both of them have gone on a date (albeit it was result of a bet between the two) and exchange cell phone numbers.   During the events of the 14th novel, she calls Touma who is on a trip to Avignon, in France, when he is attacked by Terra of the Left. Even though his cellphone is damaged, Mikoto is still able to listen and learns a startling revelations from Terra that Touma actually lost his memories and has been pretending to his friends all this time. Confused, she confronts Touma when he returns to Academy City in the 16th novel and forces him to tell the truth. After revealing everything to her including what he has been through, Mikoto is first confused on why does she care about him until she finally realizes that she loves Touma. Realizing she may lose him again, she resolves to help him in any way, including making peace with her rival "The Queen of Tokiwadai," hoping she will help her try to return his lost memories, and joining him in his battles to keep him safe. Touma, however decides not to get her involved in his burdens since he does not want her to suffer again like she did during the Sisters incident and he also made a promise to Etzali to protect her. Mikoto Misaka

Age: 15-16 Height: 168 cm Hair color: white Eye color: red Classification: Esper Affiliation: GROUP (Former operative)  Occupation: Nagatenjouki Academy Level: 5 Partner: Last Order Ability: One-Way Road Quote: "Just because I've gotten weaker, it doesn't mean that you got stronger, right?"  Accelerator is the most powerful Psychic in Academy City. His real name is unknown, though Accelerator recalls his surname was composed of two characters and his given name consisted of three characters. First appearing as an antagonist of the third light novel, he later becomes a main character and the lead of the science side in the Toaru Majutsu no Index series, especially in volumes 5, 8, 12, 13, SS1, SS2, 15, 14, 19, and 20.  A sadistic boy about the same age as Touma, he has an ability called "Vector Change," a form of telekinesis allowing him to change the vector values of anything he touches due in part of having a thin coat of AIM fields surrounding his body. This ability allows Accelerator perform feats such as reversing the blood flow inside a person's body, increasing the wind velocity around him to create a massive plasma storm, and blocking sound. His ability is automatic, which means that he must consciously allow gravity to affect him and that his body blocks all ultraviolet radiation, resulting his albino appearance (white hair and pale skin) because his body is unable to make melanin. The automatic nature of Redirection also prevents the use of projectiles (like bullets) and explosives (like bombs) against him.  Accelerator's unique ability made him the subject of an experiment attempting to create the first Level 6 ESPer; according to the city's best supercomputer, Tree Diagram (which was unprecedentedly destroyed by Index's Dragon Breath), this feat could only be achieved by killing 128 skilled Level 5 ESPer without a single failure. Since there are only six other known Level 5s in Academy City, an alternative plan was formed to "level up" Accelerator by having him kill 20,000 skilled Level 3 ESPers: the Misaka clones. He willingly joins the experiment to gain a reputation as the most powerful and feared ESPer that no one would be foolish enough to challenge and even killed many who got in his way.  Mikoto tries to stop the experiment to save her sisters, but it is Touma who finally does so and defeats Accelerator after discovering his weakness: Accelerator was physically weak because of his total reliance on his powers. Overconfidence in his psychic abilities resulted in his defeat as Touma beat him with his Imagine Breaker and street-fighting skills.  After his defeat in volume three of the light novels, he reappears in the fifth novel where his past was also revealed. He was taken to Academy City at a young age when his powers were first discovered but due to a lack understanding of his powers, people feared him and in some cases tried to kill him. Due to the many attempts on his life and the numerous experiments performed on him, these events shaped Accelerator into a sadist and made it hard for him to trust anyone except for Kikyou Yoshikawa, the only scientist who ever cared about him and saved his life. He also takes a more heroic role by protecting a young girl named Last Order, the last Misaka clone who believes through the memories of the Sister clones who fought him that Accelerator is not a bad person and actually never wanted to hurt the clones, trying to frighten them and telling them not to fight him, a theory Accelerator dismisses. In the aftermath of the incident, Accelerator is shot in the head by Ao Amai, damaging his brain and severely limiting the use of his power. Accelerator returns in the eighth novel with an electrode made by Heaven Canceler that links his brain with the Misaka Network. With this he is able to use half of his powers, but the battery of the electrode can only allow him to use them for 15 minutes and due to the injury he suffered, he is forced to use a cane. Toward the end of volume 13, Accelerator begins to "awaken" after nearly being killed by Amata Kihara and truly "awakens" in volume 15, gaining Black Wings, when fighting another "awakened" level 5, Teitoku Kakine, showing he no longer needs to touch in order to use his powers. In the events of the 19th novel he meets Aiwass, a higher dimensional being, summoned to their plane of existence. Aiwass explains to him when AIM entities like him are manifested, Last Order is heavily strained and may die if left untreated. To help Last Order, who has collapsed from sustaining Aiwass, Accelerator follows Aiwass' advice and heads to Russia during World War III in search of Index, unaware that he has met her before.  In Russia, after being ambushed by Russian mages, he acquires the "Goatskin," a mysterious document sought after by both Academy City and the Russian government that has the knowledge about the Archangels and Heaven, and later runs into a Misaka WORST clone, learning that Aleister intends to eliminate Last Order, now obsolete to create a new Misaka network. Despite being more powerful than the Misaka WORST clone, Accelerator is unable to bring himself to harm another clone after the Level 6 experiment and becomes mentally unstable after the clone attempts to kill Last Order and later tries to kill herself. Accelerator goes on a rampage until Touma arrives where he turns his frustration regarding Last Order's condition onto TÅ�ma and a fight ensues between the two. After Accelerator is defeated again, Touma uses his Imagine Breaker to stabilize Last Order and leaves a note informing him of Index's true whereabouts. Later, he joins forces with Elizarinian soldiers and Misaka WORST to find spies in their country, and fought Archangel Gabriel along with Hyouka, where after studying the Goatskin, he learns to understand the angel's language turning him into an angel as a side effect. With his new powers, he is able to decode one of Index's songs and was finally able to cure Last Order but is injured in the process.  After the war of Russia ended, Accelerator made sure Academy City's Board of Directors had ordered to disband all underground factions of Academy City like GROUP, ITEM etc. With that, he finally dragged himself, and Last Order and Misaka WORST out of Academy City's dark side.   But as he was getting used to the peaceful afterwards, soon again he was caught up in the movement of GREMLIN, having to become involved with Academy City's dark side again as well as the Magic side too. He assists Levinia Birdway in the Hawaii incident, teaming up with Kamijou Touma, Misaka Mikoto and Hamazura Shiage. Later he also fights against Dark Matter Kakine Teitoku, this time teaming up with Meltdowner. Thanks to the particular fight, he finally becomes able to terms with his guilt about massacring the sisters.  In New Testament volume 7, he finds out about the Agitate Halation Project and steps into it to make sure the darkness of Academy City isn't revived because of it. It results in participating in a battle royale with a group of espers of various levels, all of whom were aiming to be the 'true hero' of the Agitate Halation project. Accelerator takes it upon himself to test the worthiness of the self proclaimed hero, saying "Interesting. Then let's put you to the test, heroes. I'll use these bloody hands to see if you are worthy of that name!!"

Accelerator

Age: 15-16 Height: 180 cm Hair color: light blue Classification: Esper  TÅ�ma's friend and classmate. A funny individual who tends to see TÅ�ma's bad luck, who he calls "Kami-yan," in a different way. He is a self-confessed pervert, lolicon and masochist who enjoys being punished by his teacher, Tsukuyomi. He is always seen with Motoharu. Together with him, Motoharu and TÅ�ma, they are known as the three idiots in their class, as not only do they have the lowest test scores but also they are all level 0's except the latter two have good reasons for being that way.  "Pierce Aogami" is actually a nickname that means "Blue Hair With Piercings." His real name has not yet been revealed.

Pierce Aogami

She is a character introduced in Toaru Majutsu no Index. She is an operative of Annihilatus of the Russian Orthodox Church, which specializes in the hunting down of spirits that are not supposed to exist. Her form makes it's appearance early in the series during the Angel Fall Arc, however, her first actual appearance is seen much later in the series. She is hinted to be an avid drinker and doesn't mind enjoying Brandy in work hours even though she is not supposed to.  Sasha can easily be distinguished by her signature look, a red hood and cape (which hides her long curly blond hair) and matching pointy red shoes. Her torso and limbs are covered with leather belts, and has metal braces on her ankles, wrist and waist, the latter being used to carry her many eccentric weaponry. Under is small layer of clothing that covers her torso and her arms up to the wrist, and acts like a thigh-high socks, they are form-fitting which naturally shows Sasha's figure.  Sasha's skimpy dress can be attributed to her female superior—Vassilisa—who forced Sasha to wear it as part of her hobby.

Sasha Croitsef

Her sorcery name Intimus115, "Everything I offer to my lost friend." A member of Necessarius and a talented "Decoder," she has dark skin and wears a black Gothic Lolita dress. Her blonde hair is unkempt and according to Tsuchimikado, she has the silhouette of a lion. She is a master of Kabbalah Statue art and utilizes oil pastel or chalk to draw a spell to summon a golem Sherry refers to as "Ellis."  Sherry appears in Academy City with the intention of attacking a person of importance to either Academy City or Necessarius in order to cause a conflict and eventually, war between the two factions. During her assault, she reveals to TÅ�ma that she seeks to keep science and magic divided as revenge for her late friend Ellis, an esper from Academy City. Ellis was involved in a secret experiment 20 years ago between Academy City and a faction of Necessarius in an attempt to create the first magician-esper hybrid. But it failed as not only did the espers participants suffered major injuries from magic but were killed by the Knights of England as the experiment was illegal under the truce between Science and Magic. Blaming both sides for letting Ellis suffer and be killed, Sherry swore revenge against them by making them suffered like she did.  (Source: Wikipedia)

Sherry Cromwell

Height: 160 cm Hair color: black purple Eye color: purple Classification: Esper (Gemstone)  A quiet young girl with a rather blunt personality who wears Miko attire.  While she may seem normal, she is also known as "Deep Blood" and has the ability to kill vampires when they approach her, as her blood's smell attracts them. However, it made her miserable because it killed her family and friends that were turned into vampires. This prompts her to go to Academy City, hoping to find a way to get rid of her powers, until she meets the alchemist Aureolus Izzard. She cooperates with him because he told her that her blood can be used to save the life of a person he cared for (Index) in return for helping her get rid of her powers. When Aureolus learns Index's life was already saved by TÅ�ma and tries to kill him, Aisa attempts to defend TÅ�ma, which prompts Aureolus to use his alchemy to try to kill her as she was now useless to him. Her life was saved by TÅ�ma who dispelled the spell on her with his right hand. When she asks TÅ�ma about why he saved her, he told her that he did not have a reason to rescue her. After the incident, she lives with TÅ�ma and Index but later moves to Komoe's apartment and wears a magical power-blocking cross, which enables her to live what she had always wanted: a normal life. She was formerly a student at Kirigaoka Academy for Girls, one of the five elite schools of Academy City, but was transfer to TÅ�ma's school when her sponsor, Aureolus Izzard mysteriously disappear thus ending her enrollment at Kirigaoka Academy. Ever since TÅ�ma saved her life, Aisa started to have feelings for him, which is ironic as she once joked that TÅ�ma's life was like a dating sim.

Toaru Majutsu no Index

Academy City, Japan, is at the forefront of science. Besides being 30 years ahead of the world technologically, more than three-fourths of this peculiar city's population consists of students developing their psychic abilities as espers in various institutions. Among these students is Touma Kamijou, a high school boy with the lowest psychic rank of zero, but with a mysterious power no scientist can understand: "Imagine Breaker," which allows him to negate other supernatural abilities.
This, however, doesn't affect Kamijou's life in the least as he plays his role as a regular teenager; that is, until he meets the strange Index Librorum Prohibitorum, a young girl who has memorized the entire forbidden grimoires, and now a dangerous organization is hunting Index down.
